Course Description Blended FAW + Outdoor First Aid

This course is suitable for learners working in an outdoor environment who are required to undertake the role of a first aider in the workplace.

The e-learning module enables you to do part of your course online before attending a practical session in the classroom

It meets all HSE requirements for First Aid at Work training other than the practical assessments which must be carried out in the classroom in order to receive the First Aid at Work certificate.

Course content provides learners with the knowledge to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the first-aider
  • Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and
    effectively in an emergency
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is unresponsive (including seizure);
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use an automated external defibrillator
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock including anaphylactic shock
  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and
    bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)
  • Recognise the presence of major illness (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes) and provide appropriate first aid
  • Administer first aid to a casualty with:
    – Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries;
    – Chest injuries
    – Burns and scalds
    – Eye injuries
    – Sudden poisoning – including blue green algae, giant hogweed
  • Weil’s Disease, Cryptosporidiosis, E.coli 0157
  • Animal and insect bites and stings including ticks and Lyme Disease, jellyfish, sea urchins and snakes
  • Extremes of temperature including hypothermia, frost bite, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and dehydration
